Why You Should Not Lie During Interviews

Why You Should Not Lie During Interviews

  • After a prolonged wait, when you hear from an HR manager and are invited for an interview, you feel all pumped up. You want to make that job yours and it can be tempting to present an exaggerated image of yourself.

  • Whatever you do, don't lie: Not on your resume and never during an interview. When your lie gets caught is just a question of time?straightaway or years later during an investigation, a job promotion, or a transfer. Its impact can be long-lasting.

  • We have had to reject candidates who have resorted to lying and cheating. In the two recent cases, one candidate was found to be taking the help of another person for answering questions during a telephone interview. Another candidate was rejected in a Skype interview as he was googling responses.

  • An interview is a two-way decision-making process. Use this opportunity to understand as to how the parties will benefit mutually. If we are not honest with each other, then what's the point of the interview? Being successful in an interview with fake attributes might get you the job, but sooner or later the truth will catch up with you.

  • Let's say you do get the job. If you were hired based on the skills you don't actually have, it's only a matter of time before your employer will know the truth. You won't be able to accomplish anything at work, and it could lead to your termination.

  • The company being a larger entity can handle a bad fish. On the contrary, you would have wasted your time and opportunity and jeopardized your future. Companies do a lot of background checks before hiring. Skeletons in your closet won't help make your case with a new organization.

  • Employers would check up on you after the initial interview. They may possibly contact your previous employers and references. You definitely do not want to be caught lying about your professional history. The verification process may lead to the employment offer being rescinded. Be honest, and explain any past situations or career breaks when asked.

  • Honesty truly is the best policy. So, be as truthful as possible when discussing your abilities. If you believe you are weak in one area, talk about how you would like additional training in order to hone that skill.

  • The industry is small and most hiring managers are well connected. It's not a good idea to antagonize employers by making up stories.

  • Employers are not looking for perfect answers or out-of-the-world IQ. They are looking for smart and well-rounded individuals who will genuinely help them succeed. Show your passion and clear thought process in the interview. Don't try to be someone else. This will definitely help you get your dream job.
